Stone Surface Solutions

Case Studies

Real stone repair projects, documented end-to-end.

A selection of recent Auckland projects — the damage, the diagnosis, the repair process and the result. Every case study reflects work we'd be happy to do again tomorrow.

Absolute Black Granite · Remuera, Auckland

Granite Chip Repair — Remuera Kitchen Island

Damage

A heavy cast-iron pan dropped on the corner of the kitchen island had taken a 12 mm crescent chip out of the polished edge, exposing the unsealed sub-surface and leaving a visible white scar against the black polish.

Process

We cleaned the chipped area, removed loose fragments, then built up the missing edge in tinted stone-grade epoxy — colour-matched on-site to the slab's exact black tone with subtle mineral fleck. After curing the repair was profiled with diamond pads, polished to match the surrounding mirror finish, and the entire benchtop was re-sealed.

Result

Edge profile fully restored. Repair invisible at normal viewing distance and detectable only by close inspection under raking light. Total time on-site: 90 minutes. Cost: a small fraction of slab replacement.

Caesarstone Cloudburst Concrete · Pinehill, North Shore

Engineered Stone Crack Repair — Pinehill Island

Damage

A hairline stress crack had appeared across the engineered-stone island running through the sink cut-out and extending 280 mm in both directions. Investigation showed inadequate sub-bench support — a void under the cut-out corner had allowed the slab to flex.

Process

We provided a written crack investigation report attributing the failure to installation, then proceeded with the repair: routed the crack to a controlled V-profile, injected structural epoxy under low pressure to fully bond the substrate, packed the surface with colour-matched resin, reinforced the void under the cut-out corner with new cement-board support, and polished the surface flush.

Result

Crack stabilised and structurally bonded. Surface repair colour-matched and polished flush — visible only under raking inspection. Sub-bench support corrected so the crack cannot propagate. Client used the investigation report to recover repair cost from the original installer.

Honed Calacatta Marble · Herne Bay, Auckland

Marble Restoration — Herne Bay Master Ensuite

Damage

A honed Calacatta marble vanity had developed dozens of etch marks over five years — concentrated around the tap base, soap dispenser and a band along the front edge where perfume and cosmetics had sat. The surface had lost almost all of its original consistency and looked patchy under bathroom lighting.

Process

We hand-honed the entire vanity surface through a progression of diamond pads — coarse to fine — removing the etched layer and bringing the marble back to a uniform honed finish. Edges and the undermount sink rim were detailed by hand. The vanity was then thoroughly cleaned, dried, and sealed with a premium impregnating sealer suited to high-use bathroom marble.

Result

Etch marks fully removed. Surface uniformity restored to factory honed finish. Sealing programme established on a 12-month cycle, with a written care kit supplied to the client. The vanity is now back to its original specification — and protected against the next round of cosmetic exposure.
