Stone Care Guide

How Often Should Stone Be Sealed?

Sealing frequency for marble, granite, quartzite and other natural stone benchtops, plus signs your stone needs re-sealing.

Recommended sealing frequency

Most natural stone benchtops should be re-sealed every 12–24 months. Marble, limestone and travertine — being more porous — usually need sealing closer to every 12–18 months. Granite and quartzite are denser and may last 18–24 months between treatments. Engineered stone and quartz generally do not need sealing.

Signs your stone needs re-sealing

Water no longer beads on the surface, dark marks appear after spills, the stone looks duller than it used to, or stains are becoming harder to remove. These are all signs the sealer has worn and the stone is absorbing moisture. A simple water test — leave a few drops on the surface for 15 minutes — can show if the stone is still protected.

What sealing does

A penetrating sealer fills the pores below the surface, making it harder for water, oil, wine and acidic liquids to soak in. It does not create a plastic film, so the natural look and feel of the stone is preserved. Sealing makes cleaning easier and reduces the risk of permanent staining and etching.

Professional vs DIY sealing

DIY sealers are available but often do not last as long or penetrate as evenly as professional-grade products. We select the sealer based on stone type, porosity and finish, then apply it in controlled coats and remove residue properly. Professional sealing is usually faster, longer-lasting and more reliable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I seal my own benchtop?

+

Yes, but professional sealing ensures the right product and proper application for your stone type and finish.

Does sealing change the stone colour?

+

Premium penetrating sealers should not change the colour. Some enhancers can deepen the tone slightly if desired.

How long does sealing take?

+

An average kitchen benchtop can be cleaned, sealed and ready for light use within a few hours.
