Marble vs Granite Maintenance Guide

Compare marble and granite care, sealing, cleaning and durability to choose the right stone for your lifestyle.

Durability and hardness

Granite is generally harder and more scratch-resistant than marble, making it a popular choice for busy kitchens. Marble is softer and more porous, which means it can scratch, etch and stain more easily — but it is prized for its elegant veining and warmth.

Sealing requirements

Both natural stones should be sealed. Marble, being more porous, usually needs sealing every 12–18 months in kitchens and bathrooms. Granite is less absorbent and may only need re-sealing every 18–24 months, though lighter granites benefit from more frequent sealing. Engineered stone and quartz typically do not require sealing.

Cleaning and daily care

Use pH-neutral stone cleaners and avoid vinegar, lemon, bleach and abrasive scrubbers. Marble is especially sensitive to acids — even a splash of lemon juice can leave an etch mark. Wipe spills quickly, use coasters and cutting boards, and clean with a soft microfibre cloth.

Repair and restoration options

Both marble and granite can be repaired for chips and cracks. Marble can also be honed and re-polished to remove etch marks and restore its finish. Granite is harder to polish but can be refinished and sealed. The right maintenance plan depends on the stone, the finish and how the surface is used.

Frequently asked questions

Which is easier to maintain: marble or granite?

+

Granite is generally easier to maintain because it is harder and less porous. Marble requires more care to avoid etching and staining.

Can etch marks be removed from marble?

+

Yes. Light etching can often be removed with honing and polishing. Deeper etches may require more aggressive restoration.

Do both need professional sealing?

+

Yes. Professional sealing ensures even coverage and the right product for the stone type and finish.
